Who are Saints? In the Catholic Church, Saints are our recognized heroes and heroines in the life of faith. They become our models, mentors and intercessors—meaning they are friends who pray for us.
What is a Patron Saint? A Patron Saint is a special friend to pray for you to God. Patron Saints are chosen because of a special relationship with a region, life interest, profession, trade, illness, etc.
Who are the Dominican Saints? Many holy men and women helped form and inform the Dominican tradition of our founders, the Dominican Sisters of Peace. ODU celebrates some of these Dominican saints in a special way with Mass and/or an academic lecture inspired by the witness of these holy people. These special saint celebrations include St. Albert the Great in November, St. Thomas Aquinas in January and St. Catherine of Siena in April.
All are invited to prayer and meditation in the Meditation Space on the second floor of the Griffin Student Center.
Muslim students are welcome to use the Meditation Space for their daily prayer (salat). Students of any faith or no faith are welcome to use the room for quiet time in reflection.
Sometimes guided meditation sessions are offered in this space. See the ODU Event Calendar for all scheduled dates.
For questions or to learn more about the Meditation Space, contact Campus Ministry (ministry@ohiodominican.edu).
At Ohio Dominican University, music plays a very important role in our liturgical celebrations. Music is integral to Catholic worship and allows us to express faith through the art of music.
ODU Music Ministry rehearses every Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Music Ministry Loft in Sansbury Hall, overlooking the Chapel (access the Loft via the East staircase in the Sans lobby). This group, led by Liturgical Music Director Emily Strand, sings and plays for the weekly 7 p.m. Sunday Mass on campus and for other special celebrations. We often partner with local parish and professional musicians to enhance our ministry. The group seeks to praise God and become holier people through music ministry and, importantly, assists the community to enter more deeply into worship. All skill levels, all musical talents and all styles of music are welcome—and you do not need to be Catholic to participate! All are welcome. For skilled student musicians, some paid opportunities exist with ODU Music Ministry.
If you have an interest in music or a talent for singing or playing an instrument, please fill out this form: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=Lrh3QLGx2E28B9Mox0MF7ZTWjexfCixKnED-w3ZqknBUM0ZTMlQwNkFOWkpWU0dSVFc1WFUzT1lMWi4u or contact Campus Ministry (ministry@ohiodominican.edu).
