Intervention Specialist Licensure

• Addresses the knowledge, skills and dispositions required of intervention specialists serving students with mild to moderate and/or moderate to intensive educational needs while also reflecting the learning needs of already licensed teachers.
• Prepares teachers for the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) exam required for licensure as an intervention specialist
• Teaches how to effectively integrate technology into the classroom.

The following are the admission requirements for ODU's Intervention Specialist Licensure program. 

Applicants must:

• Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• Have an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.000 or higher OR completed at least nine semester hours at the graduate level from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with an overall grade point average of 3.000 or higher.
• Have a teaching certificate/license.
• Be currently teaching or have access to an Intervention Specialist classroom.
• Have successfully completed (or will complete) at the undergraduate or graduate level from an accredited program:
  • 12 semester hours of reading with 3 semester hours in phonics.
  • Introduction course to special education.
  • Developmental psychology course (childhood through adolescence).

• Transcripts: Send official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.

• Letter of Recommendation: Teachers must submit a letter from a school superintendent or principal indicating that they will be able to work with licensed and experienced intervention specialist “mentor” teachers in grades K-6 and 7-11 during the Practicum I and II.

Licensed teachers may be admitted as non-degree graduate students to take the five courses or six courses and practicum hours for professional development to become licensed to teach mild to moderate and/or moderate to intensive students.

Licensed Intervention Specialists teachers may be admitted as non-degree graduate students to take two of the courses (Required Methods and the Practicum).

For admission as a non-degree student, an applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a valid Ohio teaching license with student teaching.

Teachers must provide transcripts that show they have taken the twelve semester hours of required reading courses with three credit hours in phonics (available at the graduate level at ODU), an introduction to special education, and developmental psychology (childhood through adolescence).

The Intervention Specialist Licensure program consists of 16 to 20 credit hours (20 hours for both the Mild-to-Moderate and Moderate-to-Intensive Licenses, or 16 hours for one license).

Program of study includes the following courses with one or two methods courses (depending upon licensure mild to moderate and/or moderate to intensive) and Practicum I and II.

The following Ohio Dominican University teacher licensure programs satisfy the academic requirements for teacher licensure programs at the Bachelor’s degree and Post-Baccalaureate level set forth by the State of Ohio: Art Education, Primary Education, Intervention Specialist (mild to moderate, moderate to intensive), Middle Childhood Education, Adolescence to Young Adult (Chemistry Education, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Science, Integrated Social Studies, Life Science). The following Ohio Dominican University teacher licensure programs satisfy the academic requirements for teacher licensure at the Master’s degree level set forth by the State of Ohio: TESOL, Intervention Specialist. The principal licensure program at Ohio Dominican University satisfies the academic requirement at the Master’s level set forth by the State of Ohio.

ODU graduates who complete one of these programs are eligible to sit for the appropriate Ohio Assessment for Educators exam. Ohio teacher licensure and principal licensure applicants must complete a background check. Detailed licensure information is available at the Ohio Department of Education website. 

All of the Ohio Dominican teacher programs and principal program are accredited by both the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). 

Students who wish to teach or be a principal in a state other than Ohio should contact the program director/advisor to discuss the need to satisfy additional requirements for that state.
